چکیده

Neurosurgical Division of the Hospital Geral Santa Isabel, João Pessoa PB, Brazil;Associated Physician. The true importance of performing a watertight dural closure, for neurological procedures, is to avoid several complications such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, pseudomeningocele (PSM), meningitis, cerebral abscess, tonsilar herniation, hydrocephalus, etc. A variety of materials has been used for duraplasty, including autografts: periosteum, acellular human dermis (Allo Derm®);allografts: acellular human dura mater;xenografts: bovine pericardium and ovine pericardium and synthetic grafts: collagen matrix (Dura-Gen®). Dura-Gen® originated from collagen matrix is the unique dural graft which can be used in the dura mater without the necessity of additional fixation. This study is based on three different types of complications of dural grafts used for the posterior fossa decompression in a patient with basilar impression (BI) and Chiari malformation (CM). Several adhesions to the cerebellum, medulla and spinal cord were observed, as well as a partial calcification of the previous graft, along with cerebellar ataxia.

Basilar impression, Chiari malformation and syringomyelia: a retrospective study of 53 surgically treated patients.

The present study shows the results of 53 patients who have been treated surgically for basilar impression (BI), Chiari malformation (CM), and syringomyelia (SM). The patients were divided into two groups. Group I (24 patients) underwent osteodural decompression with large inferior occipital craniectomy, laminectomy from C 1 to C 3, dural opening in Y format, dissection of arachnoid adhesion be...

Basilar impression

Basilar impression is a skeletal malformation characterized by translocation of the upper cervical spine and clivus into the foramen magnum, giving rise to various symptoms related to brainstem, upper spinal cord, and cerebellar compression. It is generally classified as primary (familial), in which the defect is unaccompanied by intrinsic abnormalities of bone, or as secondary, reflecting an i...

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with Chiari-like malformation and Syringomyelia have increased variability of spatio-temporal gait characteristics

BACKGROUND Chiari-like malformation in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a herniation of the cerebellum and brainstem into or through the foramen magnum. This condition predisposes to Syringomyelia; fluid filled syrinxes within the spinal cord. The resulting pathology in spinal cord and cerebellum create neuropathic pain and changes in gait. This study aims to quantify the changes in gait fo...

Relating to classification and etiology of Chiari I malformation.

Editor: In the Talal Amer and Omran M. El-Shmam review published in your journal,1 there are two types of classification for Chiari I malformation: type A, which is associated with syringomyelia and type B, which is not associated with syringomyelia. Hans Chiari (1851–1916) first reported Chiari malformation (1891) morphologically as a cerebellar tonsillar herniation with occasional fourth vent...
